DRAGONFLIES! at Red Bug Slough Preserve
Would you believe there are over 40 species of dragonflies and 12 species of damselflies that call Sarasota County home? Their vibrant colors and aerial antics can't help but inspire our fascination. On Saturday, April 2, 2011, from 10 AM to noon, join Kathy and Don Hess, Sarasota County volunteers and amateur odonatists, at Red Bug Slough Preserve on a journey to learn more about dragonfly and damselfly evolution, mating habits, life cycles and behavior, the specific local varieties and the magic that has enthralled human cultures for ages.
Red Bug Slough Preserve is one of many natural areas available through the county's environmental lands program. In addition to a wide variety of native plant species, the preserve also provides habitat for river otters, bobcats and various species of wading birds.
Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes (also be prepared for possibly muddy trails); bring a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (short focal length recommended) and camera with a zoom lens (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
Directions to Red Bug Slough Preserve: Take I -75 to Exit 205 (S.R. 72 or Clark Road). Go west on Clark Road to Beneva Road and turn right onto Beneva. Continue north to the preserve entrance and parking area located at 5200 North Beneva Road.

Strenuous Bike Hikes with Larry Robbins at the Carlton Reserve
Looking for experienced adult off-road bicyclists that are physically fit and ready for a challenge! Not for the faint of heart! Sarasota County and Carlton Reserve volunteer Larry Robbins will lead you on a strenuous bike adventure through the beautiful but rugged T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve) on Sunday, April 3, 2011 from 8:00 am for approximately 3 to 5 hours. Expect to see lots of wildlife!
The Carlton Reserve, located at 1800 Mabry Carlton Parkway in Venice, was purchased in the 1980's for public water supply source and for conservation/ recreation purposes.
Participants should bring their own (Off road/mountain trail type) bicycle with wide tires, spare tube, bike helmet (required for all participants), sun glasses, sun screen, insect repellent, snack, and plenty of drinking water. All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
To reach the Carlton Reserve, take I-75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Boulevard) or from US 41, Tamiami Trail, drive north on Jacaranda Boulevard. Drive north from the exit and then right at the next intersection (Border Road). Drive 2 ½ miles to the stop sign at South Moon Drive, turn left at the stop sign onto the Mabry Carlton Parkway, then turn right at the sign into the Carlton Reserve's parking entrance. Follow signs to the parking lot which is on the right.
You MUST be an experienced ADULT off-road bicyclist and physically fit! NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART! Rain or shine, mud or sand, Larry is ready to go! Space for this ride is limited to 6 participants. Celebrate Spring at Pocono Trail Preserve
Join Sarasota County Environmental Specialist Jeff Weber on Tuesday, April 5, 2011 from 9 - 11 AM as he leads participants on a nature hike from upland habitats to the shores of Shakett Creek at Pocono Trail Preserve in Nokomis. Along the way, participants will see a variety of plant and animal species including live oaks, eastern red cedars, cabbage palms, bracken ferns, osprey, wading birds and other wildlife common to the area.
Pocono Trail Preserve is one of many natural areas available through the county's environmental lands program. The site contains forested hammocks, pine flatwoods and shoreline along Shakett Creek that provide habitat for osprey, migrating songbirds and wading birds.
Participants should wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, and bring a light jacket, a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars, camera and hand lens (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
You may reach Pocono Trail Preserve, 189 Pocono Trail, Nokomis by taking I-75 south to exit 200 (S.R. 681) toward Venice/Osprey. Merge onto U.S. 41 (south) and travel 2.2 miles to Colonia Lane. Turn left (east) onto Colonia Lane for 0.2 miles to Pocono Trail. Turn left (west) onto Pocono Trail and proceed past Bittner Boulevard and parallel park anywhere along the road shoulder alongside the wood mortise fence.
From the southern portion of Sarasota County, take I-75 north to exit 195 (Laurel Road) and travel west toward U.S. 41. Turn left onto U.S. 41 and drive 1.5 miles south toward Venice. Turn left (east) onto Colonia Lane for 0.2 miles to Pocono Trail. Turn left (west) onto Pocono Trail and proceed past Bittner Boulevard and parallel park anywhere along the road shoulder alongside the wood mortise fence.

Birding for Beginners
Having difficulty focusing on something new? Join Nancy Edmondson, Environmental Specialist and other folks interested in developing birding as an intellectual and recreational activity. Take this opportunity to learn how to locate birds, identify the more common species and gain a greater appreciation of our winged wildlife. The guided walk on South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve occurs on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, from 7:30 AM - 10 AM. Meet in the parking lot at 6200 Osprey Road, South Venice.
South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve is one of many public lands that are available to the public through the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. We are sure to see several protected animals in the scrubby flatwoods as nesting bald eagles, Florida scrub jays and perhaps gopher tortoises.
Participants should wear comfortable, neutral-colored clothing sunscreen, and bring insect repellent, drinking water, camera (optional), and binoculars. All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
Participants can reach South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve, 6200 Osprey Road, Venice by taking I -75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Blvd.). At the end of the exit ramp, turn south onto Jacaranda Boulevard and drive approximately 5.2 miles. At the "T" intersection of Jacaranda Blvd. and Englewood Road (State Road 776), turn left (south). Drive approximately 1.5 miles and turn right (west) on to Manasota Beach Road. Continue about a mile until the road curves left. At the curve turn right onto Belvidere Road. Next turn right (north) onto Pheasant Road then left (west) onto Macon Road. Turn left (south) onto Osprey Road and park in the lot at the end of the street.

It's Spring in the Scrub! - Walk on the West Side of Manasota Scrub Preserve
Plants, animals? Rosemary scrub! Learn why it's named Manasota Scrub Preserve. Enjoy a leisurely walk on the west side of the preserve exploring regions seldom traveled by the regular visitors. It's a nature walk at Englewood's Manasota Scrub Preserve, Wednesday, April 6, 2011 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m., when Sarasota County Volunteers, amateur botanists and Florida Native Plant Society members Denny Girard and Al Squires will show plant detectives where to find the rosemary thriving within the preserve.
The preserve is one of many public lands that are available through Sarasota County's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. In addition to numerous subtropical plants, visitors may hear the great-horned owl or northern quail, or view coasting eagles and red-tailed hawks overhead.
Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a light jacket, a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (optional), camera and hand lens (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.

"The Big, Bold and Beautiful" - A guided insect identification walk Jelks Preserve
Sarasota County is offering a guided insect identification nature walk at the Jelks Preserve from 9:30 - 11:30 AM on Thursday, April 7, 2011. Retired Sarasota County Entomologist Dr. Fred Santana will lead participants through pine flatwoods and oak hammocks describing the good, the bad and the very interesting insects found in nature.
The preserve is one of many public lands that are available through Sarasota County's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. The preserve is home to numerous subtropical plants, as well as various animals in the river as the American alligator, peninsula cooter and West Indian manatee.
Participants should wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, and bring a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (optional), camera and a hand lens or magnifying glass (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
Meet at the entrance/parking area of the Jelks Preserve at 2300 North River Road. Take I-75 to Exit 191 (North River Road), go south approximately 1.5 miles to the entrance of the preserve which is on the left (east) side of the North River Road. From Venice, take E. Venice Avenue east to North River Road. Turn right (south) onto North River Road. Follow the sign to the entrance of the preserve which is on the left (east).

Hay Ride Adventures at the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve
Sarasota County and Carlton Reserve volunteers, Sherm Stratton and Linda Lovallo will take you on a hay ride adventure that you won't forget, at the beautiful T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve) at 5:00 pm the following Sunday's this month (April 10, 17, 24) for approximately 3 hours. A custom made hay wagon pulled by a vehicle is waiting to take you on a narrated excursion. Expect to see lots of wildlife around each corner!

'Curious about the Carlton?' at the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve
Lee Ann Harling, Sarasota County and Carlton Reserve volunteer, and certified Florida Master Naturalist, will lead an enjoyable spring nature walk from 10:00 a.m. - noon, Sunday, April 10, 2011 at the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve). Lee Ann will share history of the Reserve, introduce hikers to an authentic log cabin that serves as a Visitors Center, and lead an easy hike around some pine flatwoods, oak hammocks and two wetlands.

Indians and Settlers-the History of Pocono Trail Preserve
Join Sarasota County Environmental Specialist Jeff Weber on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 from 9 - 11 AM as he leads participants on a guided walk through Pocono Trail Preserve in Nokomis. Stroll through shady oak hammocks to the south shore of Shakett Creek, once the site of the historic Pollyanna Inn. Learn about Calusa Indians who once inhabited the area and early pioneers instrumental in the development of Nokomis and Venice.

Calling all birding enthusiasts! Join Charlie Sample, Sarasota County volunteer, Venice Audubon Society and Friends of Sarasota County Parks Board member, as he leads you on a birding nature adventure on Saturday, April 16, from 7:30 am - noon. Be amazed by the vast array of bird species and nature found at the beautiful T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve). You won't be disappointed! The birding outing consists of a short walk around the Park area (unlimited walkers) followed by a hay wagon trek (open air for the best bird viewing - limited registrants!) into the Carlton backcountry with stops along the way to locate birds.

The natural beauty of this 162+ acre park speaks for itself. As you explore the trails, you can experience a piece of Old Florida. Winding, wooded trails weave through a moss-draped oak canopy, while the trickling Myakkahatchee Creek flows nearby. See a variety of native flowers and trees, including grass-pink orchid, butterwort, pine lily, golden leather fern, wild pine and meadow jointvetch. Wildlife abounds, with alligator, eastern indigo snake, gopher tortoise, deer, wild boar, nine-banded armadillo, barred owl, blue jay, great blue heron and great egret calling this land home.
Participants should wear comfortable walking shoes (also be prepared for possibly muddy trails); bring a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (short focal length recommended) and camera with a zoom lens (optional). The park entrance is at the end of the road on the right.

Kayak Adventures from the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve
Sarasota County and Carlton Reserve volunteer, Larry Robbins will lead you on a kayak adventure on the beautiful Myakka River that runs along the boundaries of the rugged T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve) at 8:00 am, Saturday, April 16, 2011 for approximately 2 to 5 hours. Expect to see lots of wildlife!
The T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve located at 1800 Mabry Carlton Parkway in Venice was purchased in the 1980's for public water supply source and for conservation/ recreation purposes.

Drive ~1.8 miles, drive across the bridge over the river and turn left into the "canoe launch" area - park on right hand side. For those needing the restroom before kayaking, drive 2 ½ miles to the stop sign at South Moon Drive, turn left at the stop sign onto the Mabry Carlton Parkway, then turn right at the sign into the Carlton Reserve's parking entrance. Follow signs to the parking lot which is on the right. Follow signs to the restroom, then drive back to the "canoe" launch. Please be on time!
You must be able to help with portage of kayaks to the water's edge. Experienced kayakers only. The minimum age is 10 years old. (Please note: All children must be accompanied by a parent.) Suggested donation = $40.00 per person (All proceeds go to the Friends of the Carlton Reserve.) Donation includes: Guide(s) and equipment (kayak, paddle, whistle/personal floatation device). Reservations are required and should be secured by calling Larry Robbins at 941-544-0555. Space for this adventure is limited to 6 participants.

Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve) at 5:00 pm the following Sunday's this month (April 10, 17, 24) for approximately 3 hours. A custom made hay wagon pulled by a vehicle is waiting to take you on a narrated excursion. Expect to see lots of wildlife around each corner!
The Carlton Reserve, located at 1800 Mabry Carlton Parkway in Venice, was purchased in the 1980's for public water supply source and for conservation/ recreation purposes.
Participants should wear a hat, clothes and shoes that can get dusty; (long pants suggested) and bring sunglasses, sunscreen, insect repellent and drinking water.
To reach the Carlton Reserve, take I-75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Boulevard) or from US 41, Tamiami Trail, drive north on Jacaranda Boulevard. Drive north from the exit and then right at the next intersection (Border Road). Drive 2 ½ miles to the stop sign at South Moon Drive, turn left at the stop sign onto the Mabry Carlton Parkway, then turn right at the sign into the Carlton Reserve's parking entrance. Follow signs to the Horse Trailer parking lot. Please be on time!

Family Bike Adventures at the Beautiful Carlton Reserve
Got bikes? Then grab the whole family to join Sarasota County and Carlton Reserve volunteer David Reynolds and his family for an off road wilderness bicycle ride through the beautiful T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve) on Sunday, April 17, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. for approximately 1 to 2 hours. Expect to see lots of wildlife! If you are too busy for this one, don't fret! This great family bike adventure series runs every third Sunday of the month now through May 2011.

Participants should bring their own bicycle suitable for off road riding - wide tires (Mountain bikes preferred, but not required), wear clothing applicable to riding bicycle on bumpy trails through the woods, closed-toed shoes, plenty of drinking water, sunscreen, insect repellant, sun glasses, helmet (required for all participants), padded bike gloves and binoculars (optional), and snacks/lunch (optional, but encouraged). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.

If you don't have an off-road type bike, bike rental information may be obtained from David at the time of registration. Must be able to ride an off road bicycle. Children must be accompanied by parent(s). Routes will vary depending on trail conditions and group participants on the day of the ride. (Be prepared that some trails may have unexpected feral hog damage making trails quite rough.)

Plants! Animals! A Nature Walk at Pocono Trail Preserve
Join Sarasota County Environmental Specialist Jeff Weber on Thursday, April 21, 2011 from 9 - 11 AM as he leads participants on a nature hike from upland habitats to the shores of Shakett Creek at Pocono Trail Preserve in Nokomis. Along the way, participants will see a variety of plant and animal species including live oaks, eastern red cedars, cabbage palms, bracken ferns, osprey, wading birds and other wildlife common to the area.
Pocono Trail Preserve is one of many natural areas available through the county's environmental lands program. The site contains forested hammocks, pine flatwoods and shoreline along Shakett Creek that provide habitat for osprey, migrating songbirds and wading birds.
Participants should wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, and bring a light jacket, a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars, camera and hand lens (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
Participants can reach Pocono Trail Preserve, 189 Pocono Trail, Nokomis by taking I-75 south to exit 200 (S.R. 681) toward Venice/Osprey. Merge onto U.S. 41 (south) and travel 2.2 miles to Colonia Lane. Turn left (east) onto Colonia Lane for 0.2 miles to Pocono Trail. Turn left (west) onto Pocono Trail and proceed past Bittner Boulevard and parallel park anywhere along the road shoulder alongside the wood mortise fence.
From the southern portion of Sarasota County, take I-75 north to exit 195 (Laurel Road) and travel west toward U.S. 41. Turn left onto U.S. 41 and drive 1.5 miles south toward Venice. Turn left (east) onto Colonia Lane for 0.2 miles to Pocono Trail. Turn left (west) onto Pocono Trail and proceed past Bittner Boulevard and parallel park anywhere along the road shoulder alongside the wood mortise fence.

"Name that Insect, or Spider or...!" A guided insect identification walk at Manasota Scrub Preserve
Sarasota County is offering a guided insect identification nature walk at Manasota Scrub Preserve in Englewood from 9:30 - 11:30 AM on Wednesday, April 27, 2011. Retired Sarasota County Entomologist Dr. Fred Santana will lead participants through pine flatwoods, oak scrub and other habitats found on site.
The preserve is one of many public lands that are available through Sarasota County's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. In addition to numerous subtropical plants, visitors may hear the great-horned owl or northern quail, or view coasting eagles and red-tailed hawks overhead.
Participants should wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, and bring a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (optional), camera and a hand lens or magnifying glass (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
Directions to Manasota Scrub Preserve, 2695 Bridge Street, Englewood: Take I -75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Boulevard). At the end of the exit ramp, turn south onto Jacaranda Boulevard and drive approximately 5.2 miles. At the "T" intersection of Jacaranda Blvd. and Englewood Road (State Road 776), turn left (south). Drive approximately 1.5 miles and turn west on to Manasota Beach Road, then south (left) on Bridge Street. The parking lot will be on your left.

Have you ever seen an Earth Star? - Come Explore South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve
Have you ever seen an Earth Star? Explore South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve with Sarasota County volunteers and Florida Native Plant Society members Al Squires and Denny Girard on Wednesday, April 27, 2011 from 9 - 11 AM. Denny and Al will introduce you to earth star and wild lupine while sharing information about other native vegetation. You will encounter a brackish water wetland, scrubby flatwoods and mangrove areas bordering Lemon Bay.
South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve is one of many public lands that are available to the public through the Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. In addition to the numerous subtropical plants, the preserve supports nesting bald eagles, Florida scrub jays and gopher tortoises, all protected animal species.
Participants may bring binoculars, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water and camera (optional), and wear a hat and comfortable walking shoes for wet and sandy soil conditions. All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
You may reach South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve by taking I -75 to Exit 193 (Jacaranda Blvd.). At the end of the exit ramp, turn south onto Jacaranda Boulevard and drive approximately 5.2 miles. At the "T" intersection of Jacaranda Blvd. and Englewood Road (State Road 776), turn left (south). Drive approximately 1.5 miles and turn west on to Manasota Beach Road. Continue about a mile until the road curves left. At the curve turn right onto Belvidere Road. Next turn right onto Pheasant Road, then left onto Macon Road, and right on Osprey Road. Turn left onto Ocelot Road and park near the end of the street. Meet at the intersection of Ocelot and Phorus Roads.

The public is invited to participate in a guided hike with Bobbi Rodgers at Jelks Preserve in Venice on Arbor Day, Friday, April 29, 2011 from 9:00 - 11:30 AM. This hike will take visitors through varied landscape of pine flatwoods and oak hammocks. Participants may observe wildlife and wildflowers while learning about the history and natural resources of the area. In addition to the numerous subtropical plants, the preserve supports a variety of resident and migratory birds, mammals and gopher tortoises.
The preserve is one of many public lands that are available through Sarasota County's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. The preserve is home to numerous subtropical plants, as well as various animals in the river as the American alligator, peninsula cooter and West Indian manatee.
Participants should wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, and bring a hat, sun screen, insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (optional), camera and a hand lens or magnifying glass (optional). All nature walks conducted at Sarasota County preserves prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
This guided hike is organized and conducted by the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center (CHEC), a non-profit organization serving the community with environmental education, recreation, research and preservation. Funding for this hike is provided by the Manasota and Peace River Basin Boards of the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

Join Sarasota County volunteers and Audubon Society members Tom and Connie Plaskett on a guided birding nature walk through oak hammocks and tidal marsh areas found on Curry Creek Preserve in Venice (west entrance) on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 9 - 11 am.
Curry Creek Preserve is one of many natural areas available through Sarasota County's Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program. In addition to a wide variety of native plant species, the preserve also provides habitat for gopher tortoises, bobcats and a wide variety of bird species.
Participants should wear long pants, comfortable walking shoes, a light jacket, sunscreen and a hat, and bring insect repellent, drinking water, binoculars (optional), camera and hand lens (optional). All Sarasota County nature walks prohibit participants from smoking or bringing pets.
You may reach Curry Creek Preserve's WEST ENTRANCE OFF ALBEE FARM ROAD by taking I -75 to Exit 195 (Laurel Road). Go west on Laurel Road approximately 1.5 miles and turn left on to Albee Farm Road. Head south on Albee Farm Road approximately 1.4 miles to the preserve entrance located on the left at 1075 Albee Farm Road. Pass the entrance and make a U-turn at the following median cut. Park in the preserve's designated parking lot.

DRAGONFLIES! at the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve
Dragonflies are a magical bunch - whimsical at best. Is it a dragonfly or is it a damselfly? Would you believe there are over 40 species of dragonflies and 12 species of damselflies that call Sarasota County home? Their vibrant colors and aerial antics can't help but inspire our fascination. On Saturday, April 30, 2011, from 10 AM to noon, join Kathy and Don Hess, amateur odonatists, at the T. Mabry Carlton, Jr. Memorial Reserve (Carlton Reserve) on a journey to learn more about dragonfly and damselfly evolution, mating habits, life cycles and behavior, the specific local varieties and the magic that has enthralled human cultures for ages.

Phillippi Farmhouse Market - now in its second season.
The market occurs on Wednesdays from November 3 through April 27 (the Southwest Florida growing season). Market hours at 9 am until 2 pm. There are over 50 vendors, featuring local growers of fruits and vegetables, herbs and landscape plants. There are organic and hydroponic produce. The market also features locally prepared foods to eat picnic-style at the market while enjoying live music or to take home for an easy and delicious meal. There are delicious locally baked goods as well as local handicrafts and specialty and sustainable goods.
